Three weeks until it begins anew
It's only January, but two early frontrunners for my top 10 CDs of 2008 were releases this week from two Georgia-based bands: The Whigs' Mission Control and the Drive-By Truckers' Brighter Than Creation's Dark. Also, Atlanta band The Selmanaires have just released another excellent CD, Throw in local bands the Black Lips, Manchester Orchestra and Dead Confederate, and it's a really great time for rock in the Atlanta area. — In sports we demand excellence, rings, etc. Many among us become peeved at anything short of a title or the No. 1 position. And yet in so much of our pop culture, so many Americans are happy to accept, again and again, vapid mediocrity (or worse) and pure hype. Two words: American Idol. — And one more entry in my I-just-don't-get-these-times file: In this week's issue of Sports Illustrated, in the Pop Culture Grid on page 27, one of four athletes surveyed is Cleveland Cavaliers guard Daniel Gibson.

AC360°: Flirting with disaster
There were supposed to be pictures tonight to give you a view of the control room from the back row. The photos didn't happen because of late word from Chicago that a decomposed body, which could be that of Stacy Peterson, had been found at an industrial site in Chicago. However, If you had gotten those pictures you would have seen: - our satellites coordinator, Brooke Turnbull, with multiple phones plastered to his ears, making sure that the two late guests and two late phoners actually made air at the top of the show - our video coordinator, Ashley Corum, frantically cutting new video of investigators at the site that was being fed in from the field - our line producer, Jenny Blanco, doing rundown aerobics to make sure the hour did not become a 90 minutes showIn the end, Brooke got us the guests, Ashley got us the pics and Jenny got us out on time.
Disney Movies
Two developers, Kevin Rafferty and Robert Coltrin, had devised an idea for a new California Adventure ride that would juxtapose the old-fashioned romance of a carnival midway with high-tech video game elements. They had a hunch that "Toy Story" and "Toy Story 2," the Pixar films about toys coming to life, would provide a good theme. But they didn't know much about carnival games. "We looked at each other and said, 'Are the games we remember from our childhoods even relevant anymore?' " Mr. Coltrin said. At the fair, the two were thrilled as they walked through rows of game booths wooden structures that carnival operators call "stick joints" to find crowds enjoying classic games like the ring toss and water guns. "We were like, 'Score!' and gave each other a high-five," Mr. Coltrin recalled.

National Half Marathon titles for Carney, O'Neill Carney's time of 1:02:21 earned him his first USA championship win while O'Neill also won her first national title in 1:11:57. The men's and women's championships were hosted for the second consecutive year by the Aramco Houston Half Marathon. Though the 36th annual event started under ideal conditions with clear skies and a temperature of 48 degrees, the leaders passed the first mile in a relaxed 5:05 before Carney, Jason Lehmkuhle, and Ryan Kirkpatrick took charge of the field, leading the field through the second mile in 4:33. The trio gradually extended a lead over the chase pack that included two-time champion Dan Browne and Steve Sundell.
Teens using steroids cheat themselves and their health
The measure of success in any sport is how well you use what you have to win, says Ken Locker, a certified athletic trainer at Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas. "It's easy for someone to cheat and win," he adds. "With steroids, you're tricking your body. You're creating something that's not you, and that's why you're cheating." But in the sports world, from high school on up, the focus often is more on competition and less on following the rules. "It's not just the kids," says Mr. Locker, who knows of a freshman at a small university who tested positive for steroids. Regulations required the school to tell his parents what had happened. They weren't surprised. "The parents admitted to giving it to him," Mr. Locker says. "They wanted him to get a scholarship." Is there a way to get a scholarship without going the steroid route? Sure, Mr.
