Dade schools eye advertising revenue
At the urging of the School Board, Superintendent Rudy Crew and his staff are exploring the possibility of allowing advertising in schools as a possible stream of revenue for the cash-strapped district. While ads abound in other South Florida school districts, the move by the Miami-Dade School Board is nonetheless controversial. Critics say children are already inundated with advertising, and that a captive audience of students shouldn't be bombarded with the wiles of Madison Avenue. ''The perception is that advertising in schools is a free source of money,'' said Robert Weissman, managing director of Commercial Alert, a Washington-based consumer group. ``That isn't true. There are huge costs involuntarily being taken out on the kids.'' Advocates say allowing advertising encourages partnerships between local businesses and schools.

Most candy fans will tell you that the salty-sweet contrast is one of their favorite tastes. At first, the Take 5 bar looks like a kitchen chemistry project some of those candy eaters might undertake while on a chocolate-covered pretzel jag. There's a lot going on here: peanut butter, pretzels, caramel and toasted peanuts, all wrapped in chocolate. And it works. All the flavors play well together, but they all manage to retain their identities nicely. This is a really great candy fix, and surprisingly innovative coming from one of the big names in the business.

Results of clinical trials with drugs in this class have been inconsistent with regard to drug effects on basal and reserve steroid levels. However, clinical studies have shown that lovastatin does not reduce basal plasma cortisol concentration or impair adrenal reserve, and does not reduce basal plasma testosterone concentration. Another HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor has been shown to reduce the plasma testosterone response to HCG. In the same study, the mean testosterone response to HCG was slightly but not significantly reduced after treatment with lovastatin 40 mg daily for 16 weeks in 21 men. The effects of HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors on male fertility have not been studied in adequate numbers of male patients.
