Obama wins Maine Democratic caucus

Organizers had expected heavy participation at the caucuses, but snow was falling and gusting winds hit as many of the gatherings were scheduled.

The weather didn't appear to have hurt turnout. Caucuses started late in Bangor and several other locations across the state because so many people showed up that they were lined up outside the doors.

In Maine's largest city, Democrats carrying “Obama" and “Hillary" signs waited to get into the citywide caucus at Portland High School in separate lines that snaked nearly three city blocks in opposite directions.

Colin Johnson, an Obama supporter in Portland, said the Illinois senator is not a typical politician. “I'm convinced he's a once-in-a-generation leader," he said.

“He's young and energetic and Washington and the White House could benefit from some fresh air," said Joe Lewis, another Obama supporter.

Cruel defeat snuffs out European dream

IN THE end, the emotions were not so much mixed as scrambled to the four corners of Hampden. We had seen Italy score in 70 seconds, we had seen them dominate the early minutes with some chilling football that not only took the fire out of the home support but also shocked Alex McLeish's team to the core. But in the final stages of the game it was the world champions who had the heat coming on them, their lead wiped-out by a scrambled Barry Ferguson goal just after the hour, their assurance of before in danger of being stripped away. With ten minutes remaining, Scotland drove forward once again, the substitute Kenny Miller linking with James McFadden and sending the most delicious ball across the Italian penalty area. The Azzurri were at sixes and sevens, Fabio Cannavaro and Gianluca Zambrotta, two of the game's pre-eminent defenders from two of the world's most glamorous clubs, were over-run.

Krewe of Zeus holds 68th annual carnival coronation

The Mystic Krewe of Zeus gathered on Feb. 1 at the historic Saenger Theatre and crowned its new King, Zeus LXVIII, and his Queen. Royalty, members and guests entered to find the stage transformed into a golden palace, from which they traveled the globe on a magic carpet ride.

The evening began in the ancient sands of Arabia and proceeded with a Magical Mystery Tour through the centuries and around the world. From ancient Rome to jolly ole London, through time and space to modern-day New York, and across the continent to Fisherman's Wharf, the night was filled with excitement and adventure. The Zeus Orchestra and Singers, under the direction of Tammy Strahan Mansfield, the Royal Troubadour, Timothy Paul Breland, and, pianist, Brian Blair, entertained the assemblage.

Hillary Clinton survived a Super Tuesday scare. But there are five big reasons the former first lady should be spooked by the current trajectory of the campaign.

Longtime Clinton friends say she recognizes the peril in careening between near-death primary night experiences and small-bore victories.

Although the friends did not have details, they believe she may go ahead with the campaign shake-up she had been planning just before her surprise victory in New Hampshire.

Her team is girding for trench warfare, telling reporters that the nomination will not be decided until at least the Pennsylvania primary on April 22, if then.

Clinton aides told reporters on a conference call today that the Democratic Party’s complex delegate allocation rules mean that neither candidate is likely to take a sizable lead in the foreseeable future.

'Beginner's Greek': Guy gets girl, then loses phone number...

Somebody call Amy Adams. The "Enchanted" princess would be perfect as Holly, the lovely strawberry blonde at the heart of James Collins's first novel Beginner's Greek. Readers will find themselves naturally playing casting director while reading this good-hearted comedy of manners, because the novel (knowingly) plays off so many romantic-comedy conventions that Meg Ryan could ask for a cut of the royalties.

Under Peter Russell's Wall Street suit beats the heart of a wistful romantic. He's always dreamed of love at first sight, and when Holly plunks down in the seat next to him on a New York-L.A. flight with her copy of "The Magic Mountain" by Thomas Mann (which just happens to be the only German novel Peter's ever read), he can't believe his good fortune.

Five life-changing hours later, Holly gives her phone number to Peter.

When U2 was inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Bono made a pointed statement to the executives in the room, saying, "The way things are now, there never would have been a U2." He meant that new bands have no room to develop, and are often dropped if the first album doesn't do well. On the other side of that coin, huge names in the music world (Madonna, Paul McCartney) are leaving the major labels in droves, opting to start their own labels or jumping to smaller labels that seem better able to adapt to their artistic visions.

In what can only be described as a coup in social experimentation, Radiohead left its label behind and stunned the music industry when they announced that their new independently released album, In Rainbows, would only be available via download, and consumers could choose for themselves what to pay for it.
