Acne Treatment Medicine Blue Light Treatment For Moderate Acne
SLU researchers to look at laser treatment for acne scars

ST on Monday, January 14, 2008

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Researchers at the Saint Louis University School of Medicine plan to test a special laser treatment that might improve acne scars on people with darker skin.

The scars are difficult to remove. Physicians usually treat the scars by removing the surface of the skin with powerful lasers or chemical treatments.

These treatments can cause discoloration for people with darker skin.

Dermatologists at Saint Louis University plan a clinical trial to see if a gentler laser treatment might help. The technique would use lasers that bypass the surface of the skin and stimulate collagen growth underneath.

Suicide rating’ could be given to every new drug licensed in UK

Every new drug licensed in Britain will be given a "suicide rating" under proposals for a big shake-up in the rules governing pharmaceutical development. European regulators are also to require pharmaceutical companies to include a comprehensive suicide assessment into trials of new medicines.

The reform, based on a system adopted recently in the United States, has been fuelled by a growing body of evidence that drugs that affect the brain can heavily influence behaviour through seemingly innocuous changes in body chemistry. Medicines to treat acne, swelling, heartburn, pain, obesity, high blood pressure and cholesterol, bacterial infections, smoking and insomnia have all been associated recently with psychiatric problems. There have been warnings about the potential side-effects of Acomplia, an antiobesity drug, Roaccutane, an acne treatment, and Champix, an antismoking medication, which together have been prescribed to more than 60,000 patients in Britain.

Acne And Rosacea Getting You Down? Laser, Light And Cosmetic Treatments Give Patients A Much Needed Boost

It is estimated that approximately 50 million people in the United States alone are affected by acne vulgaris, and another 14 million Americans experience the redness, flushing and pronounced blood vessels associated with rosacea. While there are no cures for these persistent skin conditions, dermatologists are broadening their treatment options to include laser, light and cosmetic therapies that are proving effective in managing these conditions and improving patient satisfaction.

Speaking at the 66th Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology, dermatologist Jenny J. Kim, MD, PhD, FAAD, assistant professor of medicine and dermatology at the David Geffen School of Medicine, University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA), in Los Angeles, Calif., discussed the latest approaches for treating acne, acne scarring and rosacea with laser and light therapies by themselves, in combination with each other or with cosmetic treatments, such as fillers.

Hominy & Hash

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. -- Whoever said there is no such thing as coincidence wasn't in this quiet room this morning. The light touch of the computer keys addressing Amazon.com was the only sound. I was hoping to find a listing for a VHS or DVD video of "Yankee Doodle Dandy" for our Fourth of July entertainment.

As soon as I logged on with only that search in mind, Amazon managed to waylay my effort with temptations equaling Eve and the shiny apple: "Books we think you'll like." They base this assumption on books I've ordered in the past and today's offering was: "This is New York" by E. B. White with a new Introduction by Roger Angell. I had bought Pete Hammill's book, "My Manhattan," as well as A. E. Hotchner's "Elaine's." Amazon's assumptions were hardly a psychic reach.

The excerpt they offered to further flavor the bite of the apple was page 20 and E.

Attenborough takes on reptiles in Life in Cold Blood

He can lie down and talk in every habitat known to nature. In addition, he is a continuity girl’s favourite performer. Not only does he wear the same short-sleeved blue shirt and pale chinos in every shot, he has worn them in every shot of every programme for 50 years. There are tortoises with bigger wardrobes.

Now, the first thing everyone on television tells you about snakes is that they’re not slimy and cold. In fact, they’re silky and soft and cuddly and shyly flirtatious, have a dry wit and are good with children and old people. Oddly, if you ever visit a country where large poisonous snakes visit the natives, you’ll notice the indigenous humans are invariably terrified into screaming abdabs by the mere mention of them, and simply can’t kill them fast enough.
