Across the Universe: 2-Disc Deluxe Edition (2008)
As a delivery system for injecting a new generation with Beatles music, Across the Universe is efficient as well as playful and ferocious much like the Fab Four themselves. The movie is almost an opera: plot primarily conveyed through song. And while Universe's thin 1960s-era romance never achieves the emotional complexity of even so ''simple'' a song as ''All My Loving,'' the film sure knows how to present that melody with an energy and visual invention that make you adore the tune all the more. We TV fans already knew that Universe's female lead, Evan Rachel Wood, had a beautiful voice from the few times she sang on the ABC series Once and Again. The rest of the lesser-known cast, meanwhile particularly Wood's romantic interest, played by Jim Sturgess have expressive instruments that only occasionally succumb to the Broadway-style belting that characterizes so many movie musicals.

Khodorkovsky ends hunger strike
I hope (Alexanian's transfer shows) there are fewer bureaucratic thugs ready to let a man die while trying to guess the wishes of their bosses than there are honest and conscientious people," Khodorkovsky said. Khodorkovsky, who is serving a prison term near the Chinese border, says he earned the ire of the Kremlin by challenging President Vladimir Putin and refusing to allow corrupt officials to carve up his company. Alexanian has said he is being used as a pawn to put further pressure on Khodorkovsky, who could face another trial this year on new charges of money laundering and embezzlement. Alexanian has a brother who works as a translator in the Reuters Moscow office. (Reporting by Guy Faulconbridge; Editing by Giles Elgood) .
Woman abducted, assaulted in Chch
The victim was walking along Chester Street West between the Christchurch District Court Building and the western side of Victoria Square between 10 and 10.30am. She was grabbed by two males and dragged behind a hedge area at the end of Chester Street West and indecently assaulted. A passing member of the public intervened after hearing the woman's cries for help and the men ran off. Police would like to speak to anyone who saw this incident or who have information about who might have been involved, particularly the man who came to the woman's aid. The police are looking for a male, Maori, aged 20 - 25 years old, with longish hair, unshaven, with tattoos up his arms. He was wearing a dark coloured hooded sweatshirt and a pair of baggy blue jeans, ripped at both knee.
Best international cities to dine in now
Whether it's Belgrade or Buffalo, every resident thinks his or her city has great restaurants. Most cities have their strengths—the kebab shops on every street in Istanbul, the taquerias in Guadalajara, the dim sum parlors in Shanghai, the sushi bars in Kyoto. Of course. There's fabulous seafood in Venice, wondrous tapas in San Sebastián and scores of terrific steakhouses in Buenos Aires. But to be named a great restaurant city, there must be more than the usual levels of gastronomy; we expect the down-home and rustic as well as highfalutin' and haute cuisine. No longer can any six cities in France claim to lead the world—or even Europe—as citadels of great food; nor can a city like Las Vegas claim its slew of big-ticket restaurants compare with the breadth and depth of those culinary capitals that built their food culture over centuries.
Techspin: Capitalism and Its Discontents
As the people who really rule the world hobnob this week at the annual Davos meeting of the World Economic Forum, there's always a strong whiff of do-goodness to justify the gathering. So it was no surprise that Bill Gates, in his last appearance as chairman of Microsoft before retiring to run his foundation, decided to plead for a kinder, gentler capitalism. In a speech to be delivered Thursday, Mr. Gates, one of the richest men in the world, will express concern that the benefits of capitalism seem to bypass the poorest people in the world. He is calling for companies to develop products aimed at the poor, products that will make a profit, of course, but will also improve the lives of the poorest. Of course, social entrepreneurship is nothing new. But Mr.
