Rialto perchlorate case parties agree to delay
A messy battle over efforts to clean up Rialto's drinking water continued Tuesday as suspected polluters and government agencies agreed to push past a court-imposed deadline. A Los Angeles County Superior Court judge was scheduled to hear arguments Tuesday regarding whether state cleanup hearings held by the State Water Resources Control Board can go forward. But state officials working for the Riverside-based Santa Ana Regional Water Quality Control Board and three suspected polluters wanted 60 more days to continue negotiating a settlement to the contamination dispute instead of going through hearings before the state board. "The parties want some additional time to continue the talks," said Kurt Berchtold, assistant executive officer of the regional board. In case those two-month-old talks unravel, the parties are also trying to agree on a schedule to resolve the court dispute over whether the state hearings can even take place.

NewsChannel 11 has just learned that Texas Tech Basketball Coach Bob Knight has resigned effective immediately. We're told Assistant Coach Pat Knight will take over. The announcement comes just two days before Tech's next basketball game which is Wednesday against Baylor in Waco. It also comes less than three weeks after Knight's record 900th win. Sources tell NewsChannnel 11 that Coach Knight told Athletic Director Gerald Myers that he was ready to quit and tired of coaching. NewsChannel 11 is also told that Knight told his team Monday morning about his plans to step down. ESPN is quoting Knight as saying ..."I've never really known when I was going to step down from this job, As I thought about it, my first thought was at the end of this season"...the best thing for the long run for this team would be for Pat and his staff to coach these remaining 10 games..." After assaulting the proposed "economic stimulus plan" last week in this column, I went looking for an economic stimulus plan of my own. Of course, one can criticize a plan without having an alternative plan to present. There are so many more plans, on so many subjects, than there is time to acquire enough expertise to address all of them. Critics play a valuable role just by opposing bad ideas, encouraging those who present them to return to the drawing board. In a democracy, citizens have an obligation to at least know what they don't want, and hope they will recognize the better idea when they finally see it. All taxpayers have a right to support tax limitation, knowing what they can afford and should reasonably be expected to pay for the services they consider essential.
Roy Scheider
Roy Scheider, who died on February 10 aged 75, was a versatile and appealing actor who appeared in more than 70 films, including Steven Spielberg's Jaws and William Friedkin's French Connection. Despite his theatrical background, Scheider was best known for playing a string of tough-guys in film thrillers. His weathered face, doe eyes and broken nose gave him a vulnerable air which he often exploited playing down-to-earth everymen attempting to make the best of difficult situations. .
